“Opus 109”
Bach Prelude in E major BWV 854
Beethoven Sonata in E minor Op. 90
Bach Partita No. 6 BWV 830
Schubert Sonata D 566: I and II mov.
Beethoven Sonata n. 30, Op. 109
Víkingur Ólafsson is regarded as one of the most original and compelling pianists of his generation. In this recital he interweaves the works of three giants—Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. Bach’s Partitas and Preludes, central to Ólafsson’s artistic identity, alternate with Schubert’s two-movement Sonata D566. At the program’s core is Beethoven: the intimate Sonata Op. 90 and, to close, the transcendent Sonata Op. 109, in which the composer pushes beyond formal boundaries in search of new expressivity.
