Gubaidulina Canticle of the Sun for cello, percussion, celesta and chorus

* concert without intermission

To mark the eighth centenary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and cellist Luigi Piovano present a programme conceived to celebrate Italy’s Patron Saint. At the heart of the evening stands Sofia Gubaidulina’s Canticle of the Sun (Cantico del Sole), a 1997 score that explores the diverse and most extreme registers of the cello in dialogue with percussion and chorus. The work is preceded by the intimate, contemplative atmosphere of Anton Arensky’s Three Vocal Quartets, Op. 57, in a pairing that investigates the relationship between sound, word, and the realm of the sacred.
