Handel Theodora
dramatic oratorio in three acts

Composed in 1749, Handel’s penultimate oratorio, Theodora, stands out in the composer’s catalogue for its introspective character and multifaceted characterisation. Telling the story of the eponymous Christian martyr, the work moves away from the triumphant tones of the biblical oratorios in favour of arias and choruses of profound emotional intensity. The performance is entrusted to the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists conducted by Christophe Rousset, who, together with a first-rate vocal cast, will bring out all the nuances of this late Handelian masterpiece.
