Britten Sonata for cello and piano op. 65
Grieg Sonata for cello and piano op. 36
Rachmaninoff Sonata for cello and piano op. 19
Cellist Sol Gabetta and pianist Bertrand Chamayou come together for a journey through three cornerstones of the cello sonata repertoire. The programme opens with the twentieth-century restlessness of Britten’s Sonata Op. 65, composed in 1961 for Mstislav Rostropovich. Two Romantic scores follow: the Nordic, folk-inflected atmosphere of Grieg’s Sonata Op. 36, and the sweeping, passionate melodies of Rachmaninoff’s Sonata Op. 19. An instrumental dialogue spanning eras and latitudes, showcasing the lyrical and expressive potential of the cello.
