The impeccable virtuosity and noble touch of Nikolai Lugansky are placed at the service of some of the finest pages of Romantic piano music. Schumann’s brief Fantasiestücke, Op. 111, introduce the Fantasie, Op. 17, an extraordinarily innovative work of grand ambition dedicated to Liszt. The second half of the evening features a monumental journey through Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28—modelled on Bach’s Preludes and Fugues in all twenty-four major and minor keys, yet transfigured through a Romantic lens.
