Beethoven Symphony No. 3 “Eroic” 

For health reasons, Matthias Goerne will not be able to fulfill his commitment in the concerts on October 25, 26, and 28, and will be replaced by the baritone Christoph Pohl.

Manfred Honeck returns to the podium of the Orchestra di Santa Cecilia: Austrian, 61 years old, since 2008 he has been the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony and is a regular guest conductor with major orchestras such as the Berliner and Wiener Philharmoniker and the New York Philharmonic.

The first part of the concert will feature the performance of a selection of seven Lieder by Gustav Mahler taken from the cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn), a collection of poems and folk songs curated by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano in the early 19th century, which inspired the composer’s sonic imagination. The Lieder will be sung by the German baritone Christoph Pohl, who made his debut at Santa Cecilia.

In the second part of the concert, the Orchestra led by Honeck will perform one of Beethoven’s most beloved symphonies, the Third, known as “Eroica,” initially dedicated to Napoleon and premiered in Vienna in 1805.
