Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
conductor Maxim Emelyanychev
piano Leif Ove Andsnes
Widmann Con brio
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor”
Haydn Symphony No. 103 “Drumroll”
A common thread links the three pieces in the program, and that is energy and rhythm. Widmann’s Con Brio explicitly declares it from the title, but Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, with its alternation of solemn moments and the wavering responses of the piano, also develops in a varied exploration of rhythmic and expressive solutions. Haydn infused rhythm and energy into his over one hundred symphonies, even adding some surprising effects, as seen in Symphony No. 103, The Drumroll.
