Written on skin
opera in three parts – text by Martin Crimp
*Due to health reasons, Maestro George Benjamin will be unable to conduct the concerts as previously announced. Stepping in for him, Maestro Lawrence Renes — who has previously conducted Written on Skin at both the Holland Festival and the Beijing Music Festival — will take the podium of the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia.
**Due to health reasons, countertenor Raffaele Pe will be unable to take part in this production. He will be replaced by countertenor Hugh Cutting.
Hailed by international critics as one of the most important works of the 21st century, George Benjamin’s Written on Skin draws inspiration from the dramatic 13th-century Provençal legend of the troubadour Guillaume de Cabestanh, retold by Boccaccio in the Decameron. Love and jealousy are presented as in a romantic opera but viewed from a contemporary perspective.
Performed by arrangement with Faber Music, London.
