Sacrificial Song (Opferlied “Die Flamme lodert”) op. 121b
The Glorious Moment (Der glorreiche Augenblick)
Symphony no. 3 “Eroica”
The Accademia di Santa Cecilia celebrates the two-hundredth anniversary of Beethoven’s death (1827-2027)
Riccardo Minasi opens the Beethoven Year at Santa Cecilia with three works reflecting different stages in the composer’s engagement with the ideals of freedom, peace, society, and history. Opferlied (Song of Sacrifice) takes us back to the young Beethoven, who placed the ideals of freedom, goodness, and human dignity at the heart of his music. Der glorreiche Augenblick (The Glorious Moment) is a cantata composed for the Congress of Vienna, celebrating newly restored peace and the hope for a new European order. Concluding the programme is the “Eroica” Symphony, born of Beethoven’s engagement—later dramatically severed—with the figure of Napoleon and the ideals of liberty and political transformation associated with the French Revolution.
