Music Director Designate of the San Francisco Symphony—a post she will assume in the 2027–2028 season—Hong Kong-born conductor Elim Chan makes her Santa Cecilia podium debut with a programme dedicated to two twentieth-century Russian masters. The unbridled virtuosity of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini offers young pianist Alexander Malofeev the ideal showcase for his breathtaking artistry. The concert opens with Rachmaninoff’s Three Russian Songs for chorus and orchestra, based on traditional folk melodies, and concludes with a suite from Prokofiev’s beloved ballet Cinderella, bringing together some of the score’s most memorable numbers.
