Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
Čajkovskij Symphony No. 4
A grand season finale opens with a fairy-tale page: the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by Mendelssohn at the age of seventeen. It is followed by his Violin Concerto, a jewel of elegance and passion, brought to life by the talent of Karen Gomyo.
In the second half, the mood shifts: Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 is an open-hearted diary, the confession of a man struggling against an inexorable Fate. The orchestra is conducted by Czech maestro Jakub Hrůša, one of the audience’s favorites at Santa Cecilia.
