Lorenzo Viotti opens the programme with the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, in which the quest for ecstasy is conveyed through extreme harmonic tension. Next is Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, performed by Lisa Batiashvili, where solo virtuosity intertwines with lush orchestral writing rich in Oriental and Impressionist colours. The evening concludes with Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps). Written for the Ballets Russes in 1913, it remains one of the scores that most radically transformed twentieth-century musical language through its primal rhythms and timbral innovations.
