Schumann Symphony no. 3 “Rhenish”

Con il patrocinio dell’Ambasciata della Repubblica Federale di Germania

A programme bringing together three chapters in the German musical tradition: from twentieth-century Hindemith and the Romanticism of Schumann to the intense, nostalgic gaze of Richard Strauss. Kirill Petrenko, Chief Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, opens with Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony, inspired by the composer’s own opera of the same name—a work condemned by the Nazis for its depiction of the painter Matthias Grünewald and his struggle for freedom of expression. Tenor Benjamin Bernheim then performs a selection of Richard Strauss’s most passionate and poignant Lieder. The evening concludes with Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, the “Rhenish”, the last symphonic work written by the tormented German genius, offering a vivid musical portrait of the Rhineland and its culture.
