The debut of Romanian conductor Christian Macelaru takes place under the banner of Gershwin and Ravel. Kirill Gerstein stars in the famous Rhapsody in Blue, often regarded as a kind of soundtrack to the city of New York, while An American in Paris immerses us in the sparkling world of musical theater and cinema.
The evening opens with a rarely heard work, Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1 in a single movement, which had its world premiere at Santa Cecilia in 1936, and concludes with Ravel’s hypnotic and whirling Boléro.
