Beethoven Missa Solemnis
The Accademia di Santa Cecilia celebrates the two-hundredth anniversary of Beethoven’s death (1827-2027)
The Missa Solemnis stands as one of the supreme achievements of late Beethoven and of nineteenth-century sacred music. Fabio Luisi conducts this monumental score, in which liturgical tradition meets a musical vision of extraordinary breadth and intensity for orchestra, chorus, and four vocal soloists. Much has been written about the nature of the religious inspiration that guided Beethoven during its composition. A key may lie in the words the composer inscribed at the head of the score: “From the heart—may it return to the heart!” The phrase reflects a deeply personal faith, open to a universal and immanent vision of humanity. Moving from prayer to meditation, and from quiet contemplation to dramatic tension, Beethoven transforms the liturgical text into a musical experience of extraordinary expressive power.
