Daniel Harding / Mahler: Symphony No. 5 | Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

Orchestra
dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

conductor Daniel Harding

Mahler Symphony no. 5

With the Fifth Symphony, Daniel Harding continues his chronological cycle of Mahler’s complete symphonies. Composed between 1901 and 1902, the Fifth ushers in a new phase in Mahler’s symphonic language. Leaving behind the three Wunderhorn symphonies featuring vocal soloists, Mahler turns here to the orchestra alone, tracing an arc from the grief of the opening Funeral March to the radiance of the brilliant, energetic final Rondo. The fourth movement is the celebrated Adagietto—a moment of intimate, lyrical suspension immortalised by Luchino Visconti in his film Death in Venice.
