Beethoven Symphony no. 7
The Accademia di Santa Cecilia celebrates the two-hundredth anniversary of Beethoven’s death (1827-2027)
The second symphonic concert of 2027 is likewise devoted to Beethoven: under the baton of Thomas Guggeis, two masterpieces by the German composer are paired with a short work by Korean composer Unsuk Chin. In Subito con forza (written in 2000), Chin seizes upon a famous rhythmic motif from the Coriolan Overture, crafting a witty and irreverent tribute to the genius of Bonn. Guggeis then conducts Beethoven’s celebrated Violin Concerto with the extraordinary Sergey Khachatryan as soloist, in a score where the violin’s lyrical lines engage in constant dialogue with the symphonic richness of the orchestra. The evening closes with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, famously dubbed the “apotheosis of the dance” by Wagner for its relentless rhythmic drive.
