Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is not only the story of Christ’s final hours, but an immense human drama — a meditation on suffering, betrayal, and hope. Bach weaves together the Gospel narrative with moments of deep introspection, expressed through magnificent choral writing and poignant solo arias.
Riccardo Minasi brings out the full dramatic power and formal beauty of this masterpiece, leading the Orchestra and Chorus of Santa Cecilia. The role of the Evangelist is sung by James Gilchrist, with Cody Quattlebaum as Jesus.
