The thread of memory runs through this program, which forges connections with the British composer Benjamin Britten in the fiftieth anniversary year of his death. It opens with Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, an elegy of striking simplicity and silence. The homage returns at the close with Britten’s youthful Simple Symphony. Between these two works, Mozart’s intimate Piano Concerto K.414 and Elgar’s lyrical Serenade for Strings provide a gentle counterpoint.
