Shostakovich Symphony no. 8

The Accademia di Santa Cecilia celebrates the two-hundredth anniversary of Beethoven’s death (1827-2027)
In his second concert of the season, Conductor Emeritus Antonio Pappano is joined by pianist Jan Lisiecki in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, the “Emperor”. Revolutionary in conception and spirit, the work marks a turning point in the relationship between soloist and orchestra from its sweeping, virtuosic opening cadenza. After the breadth and radiance of Beethoven’s score, the perspective shifts dramatically with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8. Composed in 1943 at the height of the Second World War, it is one of his most complex and harrowing scores—a profound and painful meditation on the experience of war.
