Biography

Andrea Lucchi has been Principal Trumpet of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since January 2003, when he won the orchestra audition; he previously held the same position at the RAI National Symphony Orchestra between 1996 and 2002. He has played as guest Principal Trumpet with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra, the NDR Sinfonieorchester in Hamburg, and SWR Sinfonieorchester in Freiburg-Baden Baden. Since 2015, he has been engaged in collaborations with the Concertgebouw Symphony Orchestra in Amsterdam.

After beginning his musical studies under his father’s guidance, he took a diploma in trumpet with first-class honours at Pesaro’s Conservatorio G. Rossini, where he also won the “Giuseppe Filippini” Prize as best student. A decisive moment in his training was passing the Konzertexamen cum laude at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany, under the guidance of Max Sommerhalder.
A regular guest of both Italian and international music institutions, he has performed the most important concertos in the trumpet repertoire: Quiet City by A. Copland (2006 – Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia), Trumpet Concerto by G. Tartini (2004 – I Musici di Parma; Valencia Symphony Orchestra; St. Petersburg Chamber at the Credomatic Music Festival in Costa Rica), Concerto in E-flat Major by J. W. Haertel (2004 – Orchestra Sinfonica di Valencia), Trumpet Concerto by H. Tomasi (1998 – RAI National Symphony Orchestra), Concertos in D major by G. Ph. Telemann and Leopold Mozart (1996 – Musica Rara di Milano), Brandenburg Concerto no. 2 by J. S. Bach (1995 – Musica Rara di Milano; 1999 – RAI National Symphony Orchestra), Concerto in E-flat major by F. J. Haydn (1991 – Orchestra Sinfonica Arturo Toscanini).
Winner of several national and international awards, he has earned distinctions at the following competitions: ARD in Munich (1997), CIEM in Geneva (1996), Porcia (1996), Ponchielli in Cremona (1991), and Stresa (1984). His recordings for radio, television, and record labels include H. Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra (2003 – Published by Video Radio Classics), and Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony with Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (2004 – Musicom).

Following his 1991 victory in the ministry competition, he taught trumpet at the Conservatorio “U. Giordano” in Foggia (1992-1994) and Conservatorio “A. Buzzolla” in Adria (1994-1996). He has held master courses for: the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra in Marseille (1999), the Third International Orchestral Training Course in Gandìa, Spain (2004), the Orchestral Training Course in Lanciano (Chieti), the Master instrument course in Catarroja, Valencia (2009, 2010, 2011), and, since 2009, the Master Course for Trumpet at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Since 2012, he has also been an instructor at the Accademia I Musici di Parma.
