Mendelssohn
Antigone Incidental music for Sophocles’ tragedy

in collaboration with the Teatro di Roma – Teatro Nazionale

German translation by Jacob Christian Donner
Adaptation of the spoken text by Gianni Garrera
*Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

Greek tragedy meets Romanticism, reviving the theme of the conflict between divine law and human law: Antigone, daughter and sister of Oedipus, defies Creon to bury her brother Polynices, but is doomed to a tragic fate.
Among Sophocles’ most famous tragedies, Antigone (441 BCE) was musically interpreted by Mendelssohn in 1841, who captured its dramatic power by amplifying its pathos and ethical tension.
The Orchestra and Male Choir of Santa Cecilia are conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta, with Massimo Popolizio as the narrator.
