Debussy La Mer
Ravel Daphnis et Chloé complete ballet
Daniel Harding presents two masterpieces of the French repertoire that share both the Symbolist aesthetic and the orchestral refinement of the early twentieth century.
Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé, composed for Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, is inspired by the Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe, a Greek novel by Longus (3rd century CE) set in a bucolic and sensual landscape.
Debussy, on the other hand, conceived La Mer (Three Symphonic Sketches for Orchestra) not as descriptive music in the traditional sense, but as an innovative work capable of evoking the sea’s energy and mystery.
