Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1
Schubert Symphony No. 9 “The Great”
Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is a secret diary written in the darkness of Stalinist repression: a nocturnal, tormented music that erupts in a demonic scherzo and culminates in a passacaglia of tragic grandeur. It is performed by one of the greatest violinists of our time, Leonidas Kavakos.
Responding to this drama is the vitality of Schubert’s “Great” Symphony, a work from the composer’s mature period, full of energy and beauty.
On the podium is Sir Antonio Pappano, Music Director Emeritus of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia.
