For the second time in its long history, after Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili during the 2017-2018 season, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia has invited a woman musician to lend her collaboration as “artist in residence” – a position to be held, during the 2022-2023 Season, by Italian pianist Beatrice Rana.
For her year of residency at Santa Cecilia, Beatrice Rana is proposing a project dedicated to musical families and in particular to Robert Schumann and his wife Clara (whose respective Piano Concertos she will perform) and to Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny, whose music she will play in the company of her sister, Ludovica Rana, on the cello.
Born to a family of musicians, Beatrice Rana came to international attention with her 2013 victory at the Van Cliburn Competition, and since then has performed on a regular basis in concert halls and at festivals that are among the world’s most renowned. She has worked with conductors of the calibre of Nézet-Séguin, Pappano, Chailly, Gergiev, Temirkanov, Noseda, Nagano, Slatkin, and Mehta, and with the most important orchestras on the international landscape. Recent and future appointments include European tours with the London Symphony Orchestra and Noseda, as well as with Bayerische Rundfunk and Nézet-Seguin; debuts with the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and performances at Carnegie Hall as part of its Virtuoso series, Philharmonie de Paris, the Gilmore Keyboard Festival, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg (Pro Arte Series), Kölner Philharmonie, and the Liederhalle in Stuttgart.
Beatrice Rana records under exclusive arrangement for Warner Classics; and already boasts numerous recordings acclaimed by international critics and honoured with the most prestigious awards. She recorded her first album in 2015 with our own Orchestra and Antonio Pappano (Prokofiev’s Concerto no. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Concerto no. 1), receiving the authoritative Editor’s Choice award from Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine’s Newcomer of the Year award; in 2017, she recorded Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which earned her the “Young Artist of the Year” award at the Gramophone Awards as well as “Discovery of the year” honours at the Edison Awards. Her latest solo album, dedicated to Stravinsky and Ravel, was recorded in 2019, and a CD of music by Chopin is forthcoming. In 2017, she founded the “Classiche Forme” Festival in Lecce, her native city, and has been artistic director of Orchestra Filarmonica di Benevento since 2020. Beatrice Rana is a regular guest at the Accademia’s concerts.
