In addition he studied with Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena for four years (1977-80). In the early 1980s he won various national and international competitions and, over the last 25 years has received commissions from the most important Italian and European institutions. Furthermore his music can be heard in the main festivals and many European and American radio stations and has been recorded, on CDs and DVDs by the labels Stradivarius, Decca, EmaVinci Records, Bis Records, Aura etc…
In 2002 he published a Quaderno di Cultura Contemporanea entitled “Ah, lei fa il compositore? E che genere di musica scrive?”, four essays of reflections on composing, the latter being an analysis and detailed illustration of his techniques of composition. A second book about him and his composing, Nella mente del compositore,has been published in 2021 with the collaboration of Andrea Monarda.
In April 2009 he made his debut in opera with “Il carro e i canti “, by Puŝkin, commissioned by the Teatro Verdi of Trieste for its opera season 2008- 09. A second opera, Leggenda, from the Legend of the Great Inquisitor in the Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky, commissioned by the Teatro Regio in Turin for the 2010-2011 Opera Season, was staged at the Teatro Carignano in September 2011, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and produced by Stefano Poda.
A third opera, Il suono giallo, from texts of Kandinskij, commission of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna for the 2014-2015 Opera season, has been performed in June 2015, conducted by Marco Angius; for this Opera, Alessandro Solbiati has received in April 2016 the Premio Abbiati of Italian Musical Critics as “best first performance in Italy in 2015”.
From 1995 to 2023 he has been Professor of Fugue and Composition at the Conservatorio “G.Verdi” in Milan, after having fulfilled the same role at the Conservatorio in Bologna between 1982 and 1994.
His music is published since 40 years by Suvini Zerboni of Milano.
