Seminar Objectives and Duration

In-depth study of the main solo concertos and orchestral excerpts for clarinet. Particular attention will be given to the technique to improve the quality of the sound and the staccato.

The seminar, which lasts on year, is organized with lessons scheduled, approximately, between October/November and July. The seminar is divided into monthly sessions, during which each student is entitled to 10 hours of individual lessons, 3 of which possibly with the collaboration of a pianist, and to participate in collective activities organized during the academic year, including mock auditions and end-of-year concerts at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, and, for the most deserving, opportunities for involvement in the Academy’s artistic activities.

Students who have already attended one or two years of study in previous years, may submit a new application and, if admitted, attend for a maximum of three years.

Confirmation for the following year (2st or 3nd)  takes place through the annual entrance exam.

At the end of first year, a certificate of attendance will be issued, subject to regular participation in at least 70% of the scheduled lessons; at the end of the two or three-year period a Certificate of Merit will be issued from Santa Cecilia National Academy, subject to regular participation in at least 70% of the scheduled lessons.

Please note that no Diploma from the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is issued for the orchestral specialization seminars

Auditors

The seminar is open to the enrolment of auditors, upon presentation of an appropriate academic/artistic CV and subject to the approval of the seminar’s teacher. Attendance fee include:

  • auditing of the seminar’ lessons with the possibility of one brief meeting/audition with the teacher during the year;
  • possible involvement in group activities, at the teacher’s discretion.

Teacher

Alessandro Carbonare

First clarinet of the Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra since 2003. He lived in Paris, where for 15 years he held the position of First solo Clarinet at the Orchestra National de France. Still in the role of Principal Clarinet, he has also had important collaborations with the Berliner Philarmoniker, the Chicago Symphony, and the New York Philharmonic.

Admission

Admission requirements

  • The seminar is open to Italian and foreign citizens of any nationality, even non-EU citizens with a regular residence permit, no more than 30 years of age.
  • Candidates must be in possession of a Conservatory (old system) Diploma or a 1st or 2nd level Academic Diploma in Clarinet. If the degree was obtained abroad, it will be considered valid if it has been declared equivalent to a Degree or Conservatory diploma; it is the responsibility of any student admitted to a seminar to obtain the equivalence of the foreign qualification, pursuant to applicable Italian laws.

Exceptions to the aforementioned requirements may be allowed in exceptional cases, in the presence of particular and recognized artistic qualities and subject to evaluation and approval by the examination board.

The admission, as active students, is subject to passing an entrance exam according to the indications in the paragraph “Admission exams”.

The seminar will consist of a minimum number of 5 active students and a maximum number of 15 active students. The Academy reserves the right not to activate the seminar if the minimum required number is not reached.

Applications for admission

Applications for admission, written online by filling out the form at the following link: https://santacecilia.it/alta-formazione/form-di-iscrizione-corsi-di-perfezionamento, must be received no later than 22nd September 2025. Proof of the application having been successfully sent will consist of the e-mail sent by the Academy.

Active students – The following documents must be attached to the online application:

  • Diploma certificate or certificate of equivalence of the foreign qualification;
  • Artistic curriculum with repertoire;
  • Photocopy of passport or identity document;
  • Exam program chosen by the candidate;
  • Proof of payment of the admission fee.

Auditors – The following documents must be attached to the online application:

  • Artistic curriculum with repertoire;
  • Photocopy of passport or identity document;

Admission exam program

  • DebussyPremiere Rapsodie  for clarinet and piano;
  • Orchestral excerpts: Beethoven Symphony n. 4 and Symphony n. 6.

Admission Exams

Entrance examinations will be held at the Academy’s headquarters at Via Vittoria 6 (Rome) on Thursday 9 October 2025.

The candidates shall appear at the examination bearing a valid identification document (possibly the visa required for foreigners) as well as the musical material for their examination programme, including the scores for the pianist; the Academy will provide applicants with a piano accompanist. The Examination Panel may ask the candidates to perform all or part of the programme. The results of the entrance exams will be communicated on the same day.

No supplementary exam session are foreseen.

Decisions made by Examination Panels are final and indisputable.

For admission exam and attendance (active students)

  • € 50,00 admission exam;
  • € 1.400,00 annual frequency.


For attendance (auditors)

  • € 350,00 annual frequency.

The receipt of the payment for attendance should be sent to the academic office (Segreteria Didattica) before the start of classes.

Students in arrears with their seminar tuition and examination fees will not be admitted to lessons or to examinations.

Students may pay the attendance fee in two instalments of equal amount, the second of which is to be paid by no later than 1st March.

Withdrawal from the seminar shall not entitle the student to be refunded what was paid.
